September brings…

I love the fall season. I get giddy and imaginative and I don’t hold back my delight.
Anyone who has spent any time with me knows this to be true whether online, in line with me at a haunted house, or watching as my house turns from typical two story in a common subdivision to over the top covered in orange, purple and green lights with skeletons scaling the front deck, ginormous spider descending from the second floor or witches brewing something in the front yard.
It’s my time to play.
What I especially appreciate is when people who love summer start sending me Halloween- or fall-themed posts, cards, or gifts in the middle of their season. Isn’t that beautiful?
It always hits home when someone says, ” Hey, crazy lady… this caught my eye and made me think about you.” I have to think it made them smile because against their own preference they gave homage to Halloween when the sun was still high in the sky.
Which lands us perfectly at September brings… not all of us are happy that the days grow shorter and the weather takes a wetter and darker turn.
I almost used the word drearier instead of darker but my heart said no. It’s not lifeless or dull even though it can be depressing for some. This is my article so dreary has no place here. LOL
September brings… back to school, the smell of freshly sharpened pencils or a new box of crayons, big yellow school buses, kids walking together and chatting up a storm, and within threads of time I’m back at seven years old excited about what happens next, and next, and next.
I never lacked enthusiasm about entering something new. That’s a fresh perspective I hadn’t considered before.
September brings… cooler days in the Pacific Northwest. Although, in recent years past, I don’t recall the weather changing overnight, as it has this year.
It was mid 80’s and sunny on August 31. September 1st brought heavy clouds in the sky, but the humidity was high, so it didn’t feel as cool as it looked like it should have. But September 2? It’s cool and rainy and windy, and I am feeling it!
I’ll include a short video I took to capture the sounds and sights from today.
September brings… colorful swags and wreaths, pumpkin spice candles (and everything…I mean EVERYTHING else), rust colored pillows, and orange twinkle lights mixed with the white until Halloween begins its reign on October 1.
It’s a time for change whether you embrace it personally or not. Change will happen. I have grown accustomed to pausing and considering how do I want to experience THIS season this time?
This year I feel more at home than I have as long as I can remember. It’s not just a physical experience. Rich and I have lived in this house longer than most homes we’ve had in our twenty-one years together.
Feeling at home with who I am. With how I express myself. Without worrying about how others experience me. This is me today. This is what I love. This is what I don’t. This is what I fight for. This might change with more information or lived experience.
September brings… me home. To what delights me most: mystery and magic and friends and connections and a tomorrow not yet written. I know we live in uncertain times, but haven’t we always? We are not promised tomorrow.
I think that’s all the more reason to consciously create our own timeline in a way that resonates with who we are at home… with permission to change the layout, update the finishes, or add a splash of color as we change.
Sis, you hold the pen. You get to decide what happens next – something, everything, or nothing.
