According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control) A standard drink is equal to 14.0 grams (0.6 ounces) of pure alcohol. Generally, this amount of pure alcohol is found in
- 12-ounces of beer.
- 8-ounces of malt liquor.
- 5-ounces of wine.
- 1.5-ounces or a “shot” of 80-proof distilled spirits or liquor (e.g., gin, rum, vodka, or whiskey).*
Let’s be honest with ourselves.
These limits can easily be exceeded with very little awareness in good conversation with girlfriends, having drinks after work, going dancing or working into the evening from the home office.
Some people will argue that our drinking limits are ultra conservative compared to other countries. Some will say that their drinking heavier because of a particular situation in their life. Some will say it’s because of who they live with, married to, or divorcing.
Some may argue I don’t drink out of a paper bag, I don’t drink and drive, I have never had a DUI, I don’t miss work, I’ve got a good job, so I don’t have a problem with my drinking.
All of this could be very true.
The bottom line is…If alcohol is causing you problems – it’s a problem! To what extent is the problem(s) is next question.
I have found not every woman who drinks too much is a problem drinker, binge drinker, alcohol abuser or alcoholic. I have witnessed that when the problems that occur when drinking are addressed – it’s typically not the drinking that is the problem.
For instance, if the problem you’re having with your drinking is that you pick fights with your husband, explore why you’re picking fights with your husband. Don’t automatically assume it’s because of the booze.
